Abandoned Sunnah In Ramadan

Abandoned Sunnah for Witr in Ramadan,

Taken from Ahadeeth and Atharr about Qunootil Witr, by Muhammad ibn ‘Umar Bazmoul (hafidhahullaah)

1The Qunoot is to be left off in the first half of Ramadan if the prayer is in congregation with the people. This is indeed an abandoned Sunnah, and unknown to many.*

* Ibn Seereen (rahimahullaah) said:

Ubay used to lead the people in prayer during the time of ‘Umar (radiallaahu ‘anhu) in Ramadan. When the half of Ramadan passed, he would do Qunoot aloud after the [Ruku’]. And when the 20th night of Ramadan passed, he would go to his family. Then Abu Haleemah Mu’adh would lead the people in prayer. He performed the Qunoot during the last ten days of Ramadan.

[Musanaf Abdur Razzaq 7724. Hasan Lee Ghayree hi]

*Nafi’ (rahimahullaah) narrated that Ibn ‘Umar (radiallaahu ‘anhumma) didn’t peform qunoot in the witr prayer until the middle of Ramadan. [Al-Bayhaqi in Kubara 2/498 the isnad is Saheeh]

2From the abandoned Sunnat is to pronounce the takbir before and after the Qunoot when making Qunoot before the Ruku.**

**Ibrahim (rahimahullaah) said: “When you have finished reciting the Qur`an, say Takbir. Then (after the Qunoot) say Takbir and bow.” [Ibn Abee Shaybah 2/ 307]

Muhammad Bazmoul (hafidhahullaah) said:

It’s authentically reported that ‘Umar ibn Khattab, ‘Ali, and Bara’ (radiallaahu ‘anhum) used to say takbir before the Qunoot when making it before the [Ruku’] in qunoot al-Nawazil at Fajr.

It’s legislated that if a person wants to do Qunoot in witr, he should say Takbir after he reads the Quran. He says, “Allahu Akbar.” Before the Qunoot and after. This is an abandoned sunnah today, except the one Allah has mercy on.

3It’s permissible to raise the hands with the Qunoot supplication, to leave them down at the sides, or to raise the hands for the first part and leave them down for the last part…***

***Ibrahim narrated that Ibn Mas’ud (radiallaahu ‘anhu) used to raise his hands during witr, then lower them. [Musanf Abdur Razzaq 7952. Isnad Saheeh]

Muhammad Bazmoul (hafidhahullaah) said:

It’s legislated to raise the hands during the Qunoot or leave them at your side. It’s also legislated to raise the hands at the beginning then lower them at the end. These acts have been authentically reported on the sahabah (radiallaahu ‘anhum ajma’een). Therefore all of these acts are permissible to practice.

Saying Ramadaan Kareem Is WRONG!!!

Saying Ramadan Kareem explained by Shaykh Fawzaan & Shaykh Uthaymeen

Question: The statement “Ramadan Kareem”, is not Allah Al Kareem?

Answer: This has no basis. Their statement Ramadan Kareem, this has no basis. As for “Ramadan Shareef”, “Ramadan Mubaarik”, “Ramadan Atheem”, these descriptions appear in various narrations. Atheem, Mubaarik, Shareef, there is no problem (with these terms). As for Kareem, then I do not know of any origin for this.

Saying Ramadan Kareem explained by Shaykh Uthaymin

Questioner: When the fasting person falls into a sin and he is prohibited from that sin he will say, Ramadan Kareem. So what is the ruling concerning this phrase and what is the ruling concerning this behavior?

Shaykh Uthamin: said:

The ruling concerning this is, this phrase Ramadan Kareem is not correct, and the only phrase that should be said is Ramadan Mubarak or what resembles that. Because Ramadan is not the one that gives such that it can be called generous (Kareem), rather it is only Allah the Exalted that put virtue in it and made it a virtuous month and made the time period for performing (the fasting) a pillar from Islam.

And it is as though the one who said this thinks that due to the nobility of this month it is permissible to commit sins. And this is in opposition to what the people of knowledge have said (for they have said) that the sins are multiplied if they are done during virtuous times or noble places so this is the opposite of what this person has assumed.

And they have said that it is incumbent upon the person to have Taqwa of Allah the Mighty and Majestic during every time and in every place especially during virtuous times and in noble places.

And Allah the Mighty and Majestic says:

يا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ

“Oh you who believe fasting has been prescribed for you like it was prescribed for those before you that you may obtain Taqwa.”

So the wisdom behind the obligation of fasting is to gain Taqwa of Allah the Mighty and Majestic by doing what He has ordered and avoiding what He has prohibited. And it has been established that the Prophet peace and blessing be upon him said:

من لم يدع قول الزور، والعمل به، والجهل، فليس لله حاجة في أن يدع طعامه وشرابه
Whoever does not abandon falsehood in word and action, then Allah Mighty and Majestic has no need that he should leave his food and drink.

Therefore fasting is worship for Allah and cultivation for the soul and a safeguard for it from the prohibitions of Allah. And it is not like this one without knowledge has said that due to the nobility of this month and its blessing, sinning is allowed in it.

Forgiveness of Allaah on 15th Sha’baan

Abu Musa Al-Ashar’ee (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Allah’s messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Verily Allah looks at His creation on the 15th of Sha’ban and forgives everyone except a person who commits shirk and a person feels rancor towards his brother

[Ibn Majah (1390) Ibn Abee Asim (510) and others .Graded as being Saheeh by Shaykh Al-Albani]

Ibn Rajab (may Allah have mercy on him) commented on this topic saying, “ My brothers you must avoid the sins that prevent the servant from receiving Allah’s forgiveness during the fixed dates of Allah’s mercy and pardon. They are as follow:

Shirk– Allah says,

Whoever associates (others) with Allah, then Allah has forbidden to him the garden, and his abode is the fire; and there shall be no helpers for the unjust.[Al-Ma’idah 72]

Murder – If everyone in the Heavens and Earth gathered together and killed a Muslim unjustly Allah would throw them all in Hell.

Zina– Beware, think twice from being exposed to the Almighty’s wrath. The entire creation is Allah’s servants and slaves. Allah vies to protect them and there isn’t anyone who vies for this protection more than Allah. Allah doesn’t want His male and female slaves to commit zina. Therefore He has prohibited fornication and adultery and ordered His servants to lower their gaze.

Shahnaa’– This is when a person harbors ill will against his brother and wants to harm him. Allah says, “

“ And do not think Allah to be heedless of what the unjust do; He only respites them to a day on which the eyes shall be fixedly open,” [ Ibrahim 42 ]

This should spare you the harm, knowing these acts prevent forgiveness during the times of pardon for sin.”

Beware of bid’ah on the 15th Sha’baan

Specifying the day of the 15th of Sha’baan by fasting or reciting the Qur’aan or performing naafilah prayers

Question: We see some people specifying the 15th of Sha’baan with particular supplications and reciting the Qur.aan and performing naafilah prayers. So what is the correct position concerning this, and may Allaah reward you with good?

Response: That which is correct is that fasting the 15th of Sha’baan or specifying it with reciting (the Qur.aan) or making (particular) supplications has no basis. So the day of the 15th of Sha’baan is like any other 15th day of other months. So from that which is known is that it has been legislated for a person to fast the 13th, 14th and 15th of every month, however, Sha’baan is characterised unlike the other months in that (except for Ramadhaan) the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) used to fast more in Sha’baan than any other month . So he used to either fast all of Sha’baan or just a little. Therefore, as long as it does not cause difficulty for a person, it is befitting to increase in fasting during Sha’baan in adherence to the example of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam).

Standing the night of the 15th of Sha’baan in prayer and fasting during it’s day

Question: Is standing the night of the 15th of Sha’baan in prayer and fasting during it’s day legislated?

Response: Nothing firm and reliable has been established on the authority of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) that he stood in prayer in the night and fasted during the day of the 15th of Sha’baan. So the night of the 15th of Sha’baan is like any other night, and if someone is a regular worshipper during other nights, then he may stand the night in prayer on this night without assuming anything special (because of it being the night of the 15th of Sha’baan). This is because specifying a time for any act of worship requires a authentic proof, so if there is no authentic proof then the act is regarded as an innovation and all innovations are misguidance. Likewsie, regarding specifically fasting during the 15th day of Sha’baan, then no (authentic) proof has been established on the authority of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) to indicate the legislation of fasting on that particular day.

As for that which is mentioned from the ahaadeeth regarding this subject, then all of it is weak as the people of knowledge have indicated. However, whoever has the habit of fasting the 13th, 14th and 15th (of every month), then he can continue and fast during Sha’baan as he fasts during the other months, without assuming anything special about the 15th of Sha’baan. Also, the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) used to increase in fasting during this month (Sha’baan), however, he did not particularise the 15th day, rather proceeded as per norm.

Giving sadaqah specifically on the night of 15th of Sha’baan

Question: When my father was alive, he entrusted me to give sadaqah (charity) according to my means on the 15th of Sha’baan every year, and likewise I have been doing this ever since. However, some people have admonished me for doing so saying it is not permissible. So is giving sadaqah on the night of the 15th of Sha’baan permissible according to the willment of my father or not? Kindly advise us and may Allaah reward you with good.

Response: To specify the giving of sadaqah on the night of the 15th of Sha’baan every year is an innovation, and despite your father having entrusted you with that, it is not permissible. It is befitting you give this sadaqah without specifying the night of the 15th of Sha’baan, rather do so every year and in whichever month, but without particularising any one month (on a consistent basis). However, it is permissible to do so in the month of Ramadhaan (for the evidence which indicates so).

And with Allaah lies all success and may Allaah send prayers and salutations upon our Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) and his family and his companions.

Singling out this day is a reprehensible bid’ah

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in Hukm al-Ihtifaal bi Laylat al-Nusf min Sha’baan (Ruling on celebrating the fifteenth of Sha’baan):

Celebrating the night of the fifteenth of Sha’baan (Laylat al-Nusf min Sha’baan) by praying etc, or singling out this day for fasting, is a reprehensible bid’ah (innovation) according to the majority of scholars, and there is no basis for this in sharee’ah.
And he (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
There is no saheeh hadeeth concerning the night of the fifteenth of Sha’baan (Laylat al-Nusf min Sha’baan). All the ahaadeeth that have been narrated concerning that are mawdoo’ (fabricated) and da’eef (weak), and have no basis. There is nothing special about this night, and no recitation of Qur’aan or prayer, whether alone or in congregation, is specified for this night. What some of the scholars have said about it being special is a weak opinion. It is not permissible to single it out for any special actions. This is the correct view. And Allaah is the Source of strength.
